Yurigahara Park in Sapporo

There are many big parks in Sapporo which is famous worldwide, such as Maruyama Park, Nakajima Park, and of course, Odori Park. But none of them has a cute little train in which you can circle the park to see some beautiful flowers. Yurigahara Park has this small train called “Lily Express” in which you can enjoy in the spring. Not only that, this park has more flowers and plant variants in it. However, you need to walk around 25 minutes from the nearest subway station to reach the park, so maybe that is why this park is not that famous among foreign visitors. My wife and I drove there on Sunday afternoon during one of her driving practice.

Koinobori in Jozankei Hot Spring Sapporo (Spring)

It was still during Golden Week Holiday, as well as Children’s Day in Japan. The weather was good so My Wife and I decided to go for a drive to Jozankei to see Koinobori with my sister-in-law. Koinobori is colorful carp-shaped flags that are usually hung everywhere during Children’s Day. It usually takes around 50 minutes driving from Sapporo Station, but because my wife and I wanted to practice driving, it took us a bit longer to reach the place. Jozankei Hot Spring is one of popular in Sapporo, and If you need help arranging private tour in Sapporo, you can use our trip planner!

Jozankei Shrine

Finally we arrived in Jozankei safely. We were lucky that there were not many people around even though it was still holiday season. We first parked in nearby Seicomart (convenience store), and then we first strolled to Jozankei Shrine right next to the convenience store.

We parked for a while in nearby Seicomart

After some photography session inside the shrine area, the ladies were craving for some apple pies, so we drove the car into the hot spring area. The hot spring area is really big, so we decided to just drive inside. We also worried a bit about parking the car too long inside the convenience store area without buying anything. After driving around for a bit, finally we found an area where we could park our car for free for a while (inside park area all the way inside the hot spring area).

Sapporo Chitose Tsuru Sake Tour & Yoichi Wine Tour

sapporo sake tour

Sapporo Sake Tour Chitosetsuru & Yoichi Wine Tour

I was lucky enough to get invited by Sapporo City Tax Bureau for a day full of learning and fun in Sapporo Chitosetsuru Sake Brewery and then Yoichi Winery. It was cold Saturday Morning with strong blizzard, but it was not strong enough to stop 11 lucky foreigners from having a blast in Sapporo that day! Special thanks for Sapporo Kokuzei for hosting this event, as well as Mr. Carlin for being an amazing interpreter! And do not forget, If you need help arranging private tour in Sapporo, you can use our trip planner!

  • Visit Date: 2024, March 2nd
  • Participation Fee: FREE
  • Address: 5 Chome-1 Minami 3 Johigashi, Chuo Ward, Sapporo, Hokkaido 060-0053
  • Access: Bus Center Mae Station

Sapporo Sake Tour in Chitosetsuru Brewery: Departure

It took a lot of will power just to wake up at 7 in the morning, and there was a strong blizzard that time. After getting a small rush breakfast of a cup of coffee and 2 pieces of bread, I immediately rushed to the meeting point in Sapporo Station. I was able to arrive 5 minutes before departure time of 8:45 am.

I arrived first…
Finally others arrived!
Arrived in Chitosetsuru Brewery

Brewery Tour in Chitosetsuru

Upon arriving in Chitosetsuru Brewery, we were greeted by some staffs in the first floor. We were lucky to have Mr. Carlin to be our interpreter, since all of the brewery staffs do not speak English at all (but they were very nice and welcoming!). We started the tour with some small introduction by staffs, and then we proceeded to the brewery, in which we learnt a lot about how to make traditional Japanese Sake! Interesting fact that I learnt was that all tour participants could not consume natto during the day of tour, since apparently natto bacteria would ruin the fermentation process of the sake! There was a part of the brewery that we could not see which is the quality inspection room; they really want to make sure the rice grains is pure and not tainted by outside environment.

Sake Tasting in Chitosetsuru

After learning about the sake-making process, in the brewery section, we went back to the lecture room for sake tasting! The staffs actually commented that foreigners are very curious; we asked a lot of questions! Back in the lecture room, we were greeted by some different types of sake from Chitosetsuru; including the limited edition one that was not available yet for public! The sake tasting was also done with food pairing; ranging from cheese, chocolates, snacks and some seafoods!

Namara Junmai Karakuchi variant, this is my favourite!

Sake Review: Personal Opinion

We tasted three different kinds of sake variant produced by Chitosetsuru; Namara Junmai, Shinjizogentei Jikomi, and Hatsujikomi Junmaiginjo. All of them taste amazing but personally I prefer the Namara Junmai variant, since it brings the strongest rice flavor without ruining the taste, with enough amount of sourness. This one is perfectly paired with pickled cheese. Again, this is my personal opinion and everyone has different taste! I was thinking about purchasing one myself but too bad it was not released yet. But hey, at least we got a free bottle of sake with our photo and writing stamped on it!

Yoichi Winery Tour: Departure

I really enjoyed the sake tour in Chitosetsuru brewery! Even though I was a bit disappointed with my Kanji writing skill, at least I had a blast in the brewery! After some photo session and goodbye, we hopped into our bus and proceeded to Yoichi town for the next round: winery tour and wine tasting. It was a rough weather, but thanks to the bus driver we were able to make it safely in the Winery!

All participants (minus myself)
Mr. Carlin is still in great spirit
Glad our bus driver is experienced!

Yoichi Winery Tour: Arrival

It took us around 2 hours to finally reach the next destination. I was sober enough not to sleep in the bus during the trip. It was interesting that everyone who was a bit shy in the beginning, started to talk with each other in the bus. Upon arrival in the winery, we proceeded to the winery section in which we learnt about the wine-making process in Japan, particularly in Hokkaido.

Yoichi Winery Tour: Wine Tasting and Lunch

After learning about wine making process in the brewery, we proceeded into the restaurant section for wine tasting and surprise lunch! We tasted around 5 different types of wine followed with 5-star lunch that we did not expect at all! We started with 5 different types of wine produced in Yoichi brewery as well as 3-types of cheese and compliment. We were then greeted with full course lunch ranging from Hamburg steak, salad, breads, as well as ice cream with wine sauce!

Wine and Cheese
More wine to taste
I was not expecting a lunch!
Wine sauce soft cream, must try!
This is my favorite to be honest.

After enjoying wine tasting and 5-star lunch course, we proceeded into the shop section to do some shopping. I ended buying myself and relatives a Japanese sake set instead (sorry). Even though I’m not a wine person myself, I still love the taste of Yoichi Wine, specially the 2020 Harmo Noir variant. We then ended the journey by heading back to Sapporo Station. Again, special thanks to Sapporo Kokuzei, Mr. Carlin, Chitosetsuru Brewery, Yoichi Winery, as well as 10 other participants from many different parts of the world for making this tour as amazing as it was! It was a lazy Sunday during a big snowstorm in Sapporo, as I was sipping a hot coffee in the morning, I was invited to visit The Hill of the Buddha and Moai Statues located in Makomanai Takino Cemetary. Since I had never visited that place, and I was always sitting down doing coding works the entire week, I decided to go. The trip was better than I expected since visiting the place during winter gave me different kind of serene experience! Makomanai Takino Cemetary is located on the south outskirt of Sapporo. Since it is located quite far away from the downtown area, if you are planning to go visit during the weekdays, be prepared to prepare around 1420 yen for transportation (580 yen for roundtrip subway fare from Sapporo Station, and 840 yen for roundtrip bus fare from Makomanai Station).

Make sure you take the right bus!

Finally arrived!

Succulent Shop in the bus station

It was so freezing during blizzard, so when we arrived, we immediately seeked shelter inside a flower shop near the bus stop! The flower shop is called “Takino Flower Marche” and it sells a lot of plants, mainly succulents, and it was so warm inside the shop so we ended up resting there for a while.

We ended up buying one of these!

Moai Statues

Moai Statues are located a bit away from the bus station, you need to walk around 5 minutes to the site. These Moai Statues are actually directly visible when you enter the front gate of the cemetery.

Look small from far away
Up close
They are actually really big!

Buddha Statues

While everyone was busy taking pictures around Moai Statues, I decided to go first to the Giant Buddha Statue. This 13.5m (44ft) tall statue was sculpted by Tadao Ando, and the statue is encircled by artificial hill planted with 150,000 Lavender plants! There are also some smaller buddha statues around the giant statue, make sure to walk around the giant statue to find them!
